A Pristine Paradise
Trafalgar – Leisure Bay
Horse lovers will find a home on the KZN South Coast. This stretch has some of the world’s most majestic horses, with expert equestrians ready to give you a guided horseback tour of the farmlands and coastal forests.
Located between two Blue Flag Beaches – Marina Beach and Trafalgar Beach – you’ll even get the chance to ride on these golden sands and, if you’re lucky, spot a dolphin or two. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a solitary ride, a family day out, or a romantic excursion, this is the place to do it.
You can also hike within the pristine 60-hectare Mpenjati Nature Reserve which consists of a variety of ecological habitats and biomes such as dune forests, grasslands, and wetlands. With such an expanse of habitats, you can be sure to come across several indigenous birds, as well as the various wildlife that reside here such as the reclusive red and grey duiker.
Established hiking trails allow you to navigate the reserve, including the 1.2-kilometre Impithi Trail along the south bank of the Mpenjati River; or the longer 1.8-kilometre Yengele Trail that takes you through the dune forests.
The KwaNzimakwe Multi-Trails gives you the chance to hike, bike, or enjoy a 4×4 adventure traversing the Mpenjati River Valley. This is a unique local rural tourism offering that lets you experience the natural and cultural heritage of the hinterland while expanding the geographical footprint of the tourism economy.
Coffee lovers must stop in at Mpenjati Coffee, which forms part of the AgriTours and is brewing some of the region’s best blends with farm tours and coffee tastings on offer. Another great AgriTour stop is Secret Sithela, a birdwatcher’s paradise set within a magical indigenous forest with freshly grown organic produce on offer.
For a relaxed seaside retreat to revitalise body and soul, it’s worth visiting Leisure Bay which can be found alongside Glenmore Beach and Munster. The site has ideal swimming, snorkelling, and fishing spots, with plenty of rock pools to keep the little ones captivated.
