Paradise of the Greens
Southbroom to San Lameer
The KZN South Coast is referred to as The Golf Coast – for good reason. Whether for work or play, the KZN South Coast is a hole-in-one destination, boasting 11 immaculate golf courses, many of which weave in among coastal forests with the most magnificent sea views.
In this stretch alone, you can tee off from either San Lameer or Southbroom golf courses. The San Lameer course, located in the 200-hectare nature conservancy, has an 18-hole championship golf course and a nine-hole pitch-and-putt course.
You can also finish off your round with a dip in the nearby Marina Beach, another Blue Flag beach with a wonderful tidal pool. Adjacent to the Indian Ocean is the 18-hole Southbroom Golf Course, surrounded by the lush coastal vegetation of Frederica Nature Reserve.
Once you’ve played a couple of rounds here, why not try one of the other nine courses? These include Umkomaas Golf Course, Scottburgh Golf Club, Selborne Golf Estate, Umdoni Park Golf Club, Port Shepstone Country Club, Margate Country Club, Port Edward Country Club, Wild Coast Sun Country Club, and – moving inland – Harding Country Club.
While visiting the area, a trip to Southbroom Beach is a must, with the nearby Imbezane Lagoon great for swimming and water sports. Otherwise, enjoy a scenic walk along Southbroom’s Bushbuck Trail established by the Southbroom Conservancy, looking out for local birdlife and wildlife.
This quaint seaside village overflows with culture, with delightful antique shops, art galleries, and farm stalls just waiting to be explored, and a variety of fine-dining establishments at your disposal.
Southbroom is also home to Riverbend Crocodile Farm, the first commercial crocodile farm in South Africa which is now home to one of the finest selections of wine in the region, and an art gallery showcasing the works of leading South African artists.
For something different, go on the KwaXolo Caves Adventures near Southbroom, an expedition into a range of caves adorned with preserved San cave paintings that are over 100,000 years old.
The grass is always greener on the KZN South Coast.
