Paradise from Sea to Sky
Oslo Beach – Uvongo
Named for the many shells found along this stretch of coast, Shelly Beach is the start of an unmatched ocean experience. Just 7.5 kilometres offshore you’ll find another world-class dive site at Protea Banks. This iconic Marine Protected Area consists of a series of caves, ridges, pinnacles, and amphitheatres creating an underwater adventure zone.
You can charter a boat from Shelly Skiboat Club and dive into these waters which are home to Zambezi sharks, tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, blacktips, and raggies. You’ll also get the chance to view giant manta, sting, and marble rays in their natural environment. Whether scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling, or fishing, a visit to Protea Banks will be a memorable experience.
Once you’ve explored the world below, look to the skies and enjoy the unexpected kaleidoscope of almost 500 bird species that nest along the KZN South Coast. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher looking for that elusive Magpie Mannikin, or a novice twitcher wanting to get started in the world of birding, there’s no better place to explore than this unexpected paradise.
The popular South Coast Birding Route, which is a sub-section of the Southern KZN Birding Route, takes you through coastal forests where you can look out for the iridescent greens, golds, and reds of indigenous species.
History, culture, and outdoor adventure converge in Gamalakhe, with the recently launched Gamalakhe Township Experience taking you on a tour of the township and beyond. This ‘Kasified’ Experience also includes a taste of authentic local flavours including shisanyama, township kotas, burgers, and chips. Then head into the hinterland for a guided hike across the Vungu River and along the Mjika River where sightings of local birdlife and scenery are captivating.
Another epic outdoor adventure is the KwaNdwalane Experience. Found just 9 kilometres inland of Shelly Beach, a local guide will lead you on a drive or hike – whatever your preference.
