Uncover Cultural & Local Traditions
Bazley – Port Shepstone
The KZN South Coast retains its title of having the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in the province, and three of these can be found here at Southport, Umzumbe, and Hibberdene. With its year-round subtropical climate, you can relax on the golden sands, and dip in the warm Indian Ocean, at any time of the year.
Take a drive inland to uncover more of the KZN South Coast’s unique heritage at the vibrant Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre in Umzumbe. This creative arts centre was established in honour of the liberation stalwarts arrested at Mthwalume in 1906 after protesting the unjust Bhambatha Poll Tax imposed by the colonial government.
The centre is a celebration of the region’s rich African history, providing an authentic local experience and insight into the soul of the region. Learn more about the origins of the Zulu kingdom, discover the art of Zulu stick fighting, and find out about Zulu herbal treatments. Here you can also learn more about Isivivane seNkosi uShaka, the traditional pile of stones left by Zulu warriors to honour their ancestors. Guests can now participate in this cultural ritual, leaving a part of themselves on the KZN South Coast forever.
There are also excellent point and beach breaks along the KZN South Coast, attracting top surfers from around the world. Take your board over to Scottburgh or St Michael’s – both with pilot Blue Flag status – or Lucien, Margate, Southbroom, or Port Edward beaches, all of which are surfing hotspots.
There are also learn-to-surf schools that will have you ‘hanging 10’ in just a few lessons. And, if you’re looking to try another aquatic sport, then you’re spoilt for choice with canoeing, stand-up paddling and kitesurfing (in the latter part of the year) all on offer. Otherwise, simply grab your snorkel and swim among the many flourishing rock pools and reef sections found along these beaches, with resident dolphins just waiting to put on a frolicking display.
Known as the business hub, Port Shepstone is found at the mouth of the Umzimkhulu River. Suited to business and leisure getaways, this coastal retreat boasts modern amenities. For the nautical historians, there’s the Port Shepstone Maritime Museum filled with relics that sailors used at sea, as well as fascinating shipwreck memorabilia.
