A Perfect Piece of Paradise
Ramsgate – Ski Boat Bay
Experience the KZN South Coast on foot with a hike along the Ramsgate Marine Ramble. Set off on this superb 6-kilometre stroll at the starting point just before the coastal town of Margate, and take in the glorious views of the ocean while exploring mangroves, tidal pools, and dunes.
Navigate the path using the easy-to-follow signs along the length of the route, and replenish your energy with a stop at one of the area’s famous restaurants, The Waffle House.
The best time to experience the Ramble – and a lot of the KZN South Coast’s shoreline – is during the winter months when The Greatest Shoal on Earth – the Sardine Run – arrives. While the annual Sardine Run can be spotted anywhere along the KZN South Coast, depending on their movement, the Ramsgate Marine Ramble is a great spot for some quality viewing. The largest biomass migration on the planet brings with it a host of hungry marine predators from the land, sea, and skies.
This ocean spectacle attracts seine netters who catch the sardines for delicious local cuisine, while the bigger game fish, dolphins, sharks, and whales join in the feeding frenzy. Overhead, seabirds will torpedo themselves into the mass, leaving with beaks brimming with silver treasure.
You can also catch the action from an elevated overview such as the Ramsgate Whale Deck. Relax here from May to November when humpback whales spray and breach as part of their annual migration. But no matter the time of year you visit, Ramsgate is a nature lover’s paradise, from the popular Ramsgate Beach, Ramsgate Lagoon, and Noel Quarry Tidal Pool to the Butterfly Valley and numerous nature reserves that are home to hundreds of bird species and indigenous wildlife.
This is also an artistic coastal village with a long history of renowned South African artists emanating from Ramsgate’s shores.
Partake in a once-in-a-lifetime experience on the KZN South Coast.
