The Golfer’s Paradise Found

The Golf Coast

Where every swing tells a story

Unofficially dubbed ‘The Golf Coast’, the coastline from Umkomaas to the Wild Coast (and a short distance inland) boasts no less than 11 golf courses, offering a variety of levels of difficulty and some very interesting obstacles. In addition to frequent bunkers, the course designers have contrived to include a number of ravines, some fiendish water hazards and even, in one case, a waterfall.

Then there is the fickle coastal wind to consider. Just when you think you’ve ‘got it taped’, a gust can send your ball into a patch of impenetrable bush. Carry plenty of spare balls – you are going to need them!

All this is set against some spectacular views – ocean panoramas, rolling hills and indigenous coastal forests – with bird life aplenty and occasional small buck to add to your enjoyment. A round at one of the coastal courses is about as far from the madding crowds and hectic city lifestyle as one can get. Find out what ‘laid-back’ really means!

After your challenging – but enjoyable and hopefully satisfying – battle with the course and the elements, it’s time to meet the locals in the clubhouse and enjoy the friendly atmosphere that pervades all aspects of South Coast living – even golf!

We invite you to play these member courses.

Umdoni Country Club on Route 1 has a noteworthy commitment to conservation. Umdoni Country Club is a historic course, snaking through lush coastal forests alongside the sea. Umdoni offers a unique blend of challenge and natural beauty, allowing golfers to see beyond the fairway on optional guided nature walks. View whales and dolphins from the iconic Botha House or relax at the clubhouse, where panoramic views of the surrounding landscape provide the perfect backdrop for recounting the day’s trials and triumphs.

Southbroom Golf Club on Route 7 offers a blend of elegance and excitement, nestled in an idyllic seaside village. The fairways seamlessly blend with the ocean, lush bush and quaint residential homes. The clubhouse, positioned above the 18th green, offers stunning surroundings to take in. Renowned for its enjoyable play, Southbroom has been voted South Africa’s most fun golf course twice. While the course is not long, precision off the tee is crucial, especially on iconic holes like the 115-metre par three fourth. The course provides a birdwatcher’s heaven, with glimpses of local wildlife and a guarantee of both challenge and enjoyment.

San Lameer Country Club on Route 7 is set within a golfing estate. San Lameer Country Club offers carefully manicured greens and breathtaking views. Visitors can enjoy a round of golf amidst the resident wildlife or relax at the clubhouse, taking in the tranquil surroundings and the warm hospitality. Prepare yourself for a thrilling challenge, where every hole offers a tight and strategic layout. Navigate through narrow fairways, large bunkers, challenging doglegs and numerous water hazards, all surrounded by devilishly thick rough that will put your skills to the test. While weather conditions can add an extra layer of difficulty, they only serve to inspire a greater sense of achievement.

The Wild Coast Sun Country Club on Route 9 is as much an undertaking as it is an unforgettable experience. This world-class course features expansive fairways, over-sized greens and a plethora of obstacles, including bunkers, ravines and water hazards (including a waterfall). Factor in the ever-present coastal winds and you have the recipe for a challenging, yet immensely enjoyable, round of golf, set in striking surroundings that will captivate both amateur and seasoned players alike. The course’s layout has a unique charm that will leave a lasting impression, with its mix of long and short holes. After a round, the distinguished clubhouse promises not to disappoint.
